Student summer job - MPS - facies modelling

JewelSuite - Multiple Point Statistics (MPS)
June – July – August 2010 - Delft

Job Summary:
Multiple-Point Statistics (MPS) is a relatively new method for modelling the 3D distribution of sedimentary facies in the subsurface, based on
research at Stanford University (as an example see
http://pangea.stanford.edu/~jcaers/papers/SPE77426.pdf). This technique consists of two
steps:

In an image analysis step, the 3D distribution of facies in ‘training images’ is analysed,  2D and 3D cubes with (conceptual) patterns of facies for different depositional conditions.
Patterns identified in the training image and registered in a list are then used to simulate single or multiple equiprobable facies distributions into a (reservoir) model.

We invite students to cooperate with us in the creation of geologically and statistically sound training images. This is not a trivial task and
requires the following skills:

Good command of depositional processes and the ability to conceptualise the 3D patterns of facies resulting from these processes into 2D and 3D models, i.e. advanced students with a focus on clastic or carbonate sedimentology will be considered.

Command of (geo)statistical concepts, including understanding of ‘stationarity’ and ‘scale of measurement’, essential to create training images that satisfy these conditions.

Some affinity to computer assisted modelling and numerical methods are a definite plus.

Time:
We are looking for students in June – July – August 2010.

Location:
The JOA® Oil&Gas™ head office is located in Delft. This is where the activities will take place.

PhD studentship in Geobiosphere Sciences, spec. Quaternary Sciences

Reference Number: 1216
Last application date: 2010-05-14
Starting date: As soon as possible
Information: Raimund.Muscheler@geol.lu.se
Worker’s unions at Lund University: OFR, SACO, and SEKO

Project title:
Carbon cycle and solar changes at the end of the last ice age

Project description:
The PhD project will investigate the atmospheric 14C concentration as measured in tree rings from the last deglaciation. Via comparison to 10Be from the Greenland ice cores it will improve the assessment of the carbon cycle influence on the atmospheric radiocarbon concentration. It will also lead to better estimates of solar activity changes in the past and Sun-climate studies could be another focus. The Lund-based PhD student will work with a new semi-automatic 14C graphitisation line and a modern Single Stage Accelerator Mass Spectrometer.
Atmospheric 14C during the last deglaciation has been mainly reconstructed from samples that only indirectly reflect the atmospheric 14C content. Therefore, the present 14C calibration curve exhibits relatively large uncertainties. In addition, the physical processes behind atmospheric 14C variations (geomagnetic field & solar changes, carbon cycle changes) are not well constrained by the presently available data. The PhD will measure “floating” 14C sequences that are not well constrained in time but that provide good estimates of the temporal variations in 14C. Via comparison to 10Be in ice cores it can be possible to constrain the absolute dating and to improve the estimates of solar and geomagnetic field changes. Special focus will be put on the influence of carbon cycle changes on the atmospheric 14C reconstructions and processes behind these changes.

Seasonal variability in benthic nitrogen cycling in coastal and open-sea sediments of the Baltic Sea.

Ref.nr SU 464-13-008-10

Framework of the project
Cyanobacterial blooms are often seen as the main problem caused by Baltic eutrophication. The blooms fix nitrogen and add several hundred thousand tons of combined, readily plant-available nitrogen to the Baltic Sea each summer, thus adding to eutrophication. Since they peak during vacation season, the blooms are a major problem for the tourist and recreation industries in affected coastal areas. On the other hand, there is evidence that such blooms have been a natural feature of the Baltic Sea since it became a brackish sea some 7000 years ago. By providing extra nitrogen to a nitrogen-limited sea, the blooms may also increase phyto- and zooplankton production and hence are important for sustaining Baltic fish yield.
The project will focus on the benthic fate of nitrogen and specifically address the coupling of the biogeochemical carbon, phosphorus, and sulfur cycles in the benthos: How much of the nitrogen fixed by cyanobacteria is lost as nitrogen gas by benthic denitrification and the anammox reaction, how much is nitrified and retained in the system? The project involves both the application of 15N-tracer studies and mass spectrometric analysis, porewater chemical analysis, and coupled diagenetic reaction-transport modeling. Field work involves sampling from small/medium-size ships in Himmerfjärden and the Central Baltic, and several field campaigns at the Stockholm Marine Research Station on Askö in the southern Stockholm archipelago.

The student will thus gain broad expertise in aquatic biogeochemical analysis and field experimentation, as well as in numerical procedures. The interdisciplinary character of this strategic research project allows broad contacts with associated disciplines in ecology and biology, jurisdiction, management authorities, and the Baltic NEST Institute.
