Online Flexlezing: Mariene geologie

The uncertain future of deep-sea mining.
Donderdag 3 december vanaf 16.00 uur week zal de Flexlezing worden verzorgd door Henko de Stigter (NIOZ) over de toekomst van diepzee mijnbouw. The ocean floor holds a vast and still largely unexplored potential for metals which are in high demand in industry. The ever increasing raw material demands from a growing world population combined with concerns about future access to critical raw materials, has spurred the industrialised world into a race to the bottom of the ocean. Whether regulations for limiting the environmental impacts of deep-sea mining will be sufficient to prevent irreversible environmental damage and loss of biodiversity is a matter of concern of marine scientists and environmental NGOs. In this Geoflex lecture Henko de Stigter will give an overview of the current state of development of deep-sea mining and research on its environmental impacts.
